TWENTY-TWO

The Land Rover shot off a hell of a lot quicker than Harry had expected, thrusting him back in his seat before throwing him forward to crack his skull on the windscreen.

‘Bloody hell, Dave, I’m not strapped in!’

Ignoring Harry’s complaints, Dave swung the vehicle down into the toffee-brown slew of water. Harry, his head stinging from the impact, grabbed the seatbelt and somehow clipped in.

Harry felt the power of the water grab the front wheels and start to push the Land Rover to the left.

‘Hold on!’ Dave called out.

‘What the bloody hell else do you think I’m doing?’ Harry shouted back, his hands white-knuckle tight as they gripped the dashboard.

Dave pushed on, steering the vehicle into the current, bringing the rear end in with a thump.

Harry was thankful that the vehicle was four-wheel drive, aware that all four wheels were actively engaged in pulling them across the flooded ford.

‘There he is!’ Dave said.

Harry saw the figure stand up from the other side of the van. Then he opened the driver’s door and jumped in.

‘Damn it,’ Harry said. ‘Must’ve had a spare key.’

Blue-black smoke blasted out of the van’s exhaust pipe and Harry swore.

‘Come on Dave, shift it!’

They were halfway across the ford now and Harry was suddenly aware that his feet were getting wet.

‘Not exactly watertight, is it?’ he said, glancing down to see water spilling in not just from around the bottom of the door, but from the numerous holes in the footwell, too.

‘No need to panic,’ Dave said, his eyes focused on the other side of the ford. ‘We’ll catch him.’

Harry was impressed with Dave’s confidence, even if it did strike him as being a little misplaced.

The van moved.

‘He’s off,’ Harry said. ‘We’ll not catch him in this, even if we do make it to the other side. I’ll give Gordy a ring, see if she can—’

‘No need,’ Dave said, cutting Harry off. ‘Look …’

Harry stared at the van to see that instead of racing off, it was crawling forward on wheels that had no interest at all in going the way the driver intended.

‘They’re flat,’ Harry said, looking at the tyres.

‘Of course they’re flat,’ Dave said.

Harry narrowed his eyes at Dave.

‘Is there something you need to tell me?’ he said.

Dave gave a shrug.

‘Told you I stopped for a look at the van, didn’t I? Well, I figured I’d give us a bit of a helping hand by letting them down a little.’

‘A little?’ Harry said. ‘As far as I can tell, they’re all are pancakes!’

‘Best to be sure, right?’ Dave said, as the Land Rover pulled itself out of the river. He then steered them over to come to a stop in front of the van, blocking its escape.

Harry jumped out and rushed to the driver’s door. On seeing him, the driver leapt across to the passenger seat, only to find that his way was blocked by the imposing bulk of PCSO Dave Calvert.

Dave stooped low enough to stare at the driver and then lifted a hand to give a little wave.
